Should My Blog Be a Personal Journal?

Blogs started out as a sort of online journal for people looking for a place to share what was going on in their lives.  Things have changed quite a bit since then.  When you are choosing a main topic for your blog, you should avoid going too general and making a bunch of posts about random things. People won’t stay interested in your personal journal for very long unless you happen to be a very gifted writer with a very strong natural ability to entertain others with your stories.

Pick something that you can stay focused on without losing interest. If you choose a topic that you really have no interest in (based purely on potential readers or profits) you will only be buying yourself a long term pain in the neck that you probably will lose interest in before it ever has a chance of reaching its full potential. Building up traffic to your blog can be a lot of work and it can take a considerable amount of time before you start seeing consistent traffic. If you are writing about something you don’t really like, you’ll have a tough time keeping up a consistent publishing schedule.

Even though there are some people out there who will be interested in reading about your deepest inner thoughts, the people with money to spend will be looking to read about things like specific products or the latest technological advances.  They probably won’t care about your Aunt Sally’s latest operation unless you can put an entertaining spin on the subject that helps them to relate the story to their own lives.  You see, that is the secret right there.  You’ve got to remember that we are all really just trying to look out for ourselves and the people close to us that we care about.  It isn’t that all people are uncaring narcissists, it’s just that we all have a certain small circle of people and things that take up most of our attention and we tend to focus on those things.  You’ve got to hit that sweet spot when you are writing something that you want other people to read and stay interested in.  The time they spend reading your blog is an investment of one of their most valuable resources… time.  Make it a worthwhile transaction for them by making sure that they never feel like a visit to your blog was a waste of their time and you’ll be off to a good start.

How would worldwide current affairs go, coupled with politically DIRECT views?

Or would a web site be preferable?
